CAYDEM FALLS: Past, Present and Future (not necessarily in that order)
So, you may have noticed that Caydem Falls is no longer available here on TEN. Don’t be alarmed, it hasn’t been cancelled and it shall return.
With the launch of the new Compass Network I’ve decided to relaunch Caydem Falls starting with a completely revamped Pilot Episode. The simple fact that the Pilot is being re-written means that the series as a whole will undergo severe changes. In my mind these changes will be for the better.
When I first wrote the Pilot for Caydem Falls I had no idea what a “Virtual Series” was. All I really had under my belt was this poor attempt to turn the “revenge movie” on its head called “Bittersweet at Best”. I thought it was the best and most original thing anybody had ever written in the history of over the top action movies. A series of “polite reviews” from family members and flat out nonresponses from screenwriting competitions let me know otherwise.
And then I watched a little movie called “Shaun of the Dead” and everything changed. I discovered the Zombie Genre.
Yeah, you can probly do the math and figure out from my profile that I’m damn near (literally days away from being) thirty years old. So Shaun of the Dead breaking my “Zombie Cherry” means I was very late to the game. All the same though, I started to absolutely devour Zombie Culture. From movies to novels, to comic books and even video games; I soaked in as much of it as I could.
So it’s only natural that I went from writing bad action movies to developing my own take on a bad Zombie movie. What I came up with was a script called “Fatal Wounds”, a film that starts with a very alcoholic single father who gets bitten by a Zombie in the opening minutes of the film and must then spend the rest of the movie attempting to get his family to safety before he eventually becomes one of the Zombies he’s trying to protect them from.
Again, I thought I’d written the single greatest Zombie film to ever grace a word processor. Although this turned out to not be true in any way, it awakened something in me that will stick inside my brain until the day that I die.
I really, really enjoy writing about people trying to avoid getting eaten by Zombies.
Shortly after writing “Fatal Wounds” and once again finding no success with it, I discovered that Television was doing amazing things in the form of serialized storytelling. Shows like “24”, “LOST” and even “Heroes” opened my mind to a whole different medium of telling stories. And so I began work on my first “Pilot”.
The first episode of Caydem Falls came together pretty quick despite the fact I had very few plans for the future of the series. When I first wrote it I had no knowledge of the Virtual series community. I didn’t even really have much knowledge of how to properly format a television script.
I posted the initial “final draft” to simplyscripts.com and after a few months of no responses I eventually got an email from Aaron Bielert of the VBC network. He explained to me what a Virtual Series was and how they worked. I was instantly intrigued. Four episodes into Caydem Falls first run and VBC suddenly vanished. A cryptic message left in its place lead me to believe that the network was gone for good.
With VBC seemingly dead and gone I pitched my series to TEN with much success. Caydem Falls has now been on The Entertainment Network for two seasons and although I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished thus far, there are many aspects of the show I’m not nearly as happy with. The upcoming #evolution known as The Compass Network felt like the perfect opportunity do go back and rectify some of those early mistakes.
So what does this mean for long time fans of the show? Well, the changes won’t be so drastic that you’ll think you’re reading a whole new show but I think they are big enough that even the most die hard fans will still find quite a few surprises in each episode.
With that said, after every season I plan to release a sort of “recap” to freshen reader’s minds as to what’s been going on in the series. So theoretically if you’ve already read the TEN version of season’s one and two you should be able to jump right into three rather quickly if you choose not to check out the first two seasons on Compass.
Apart from rewriting the series for Compass, this new version of the show will also come complete with a “Post Show” attached to the end of every episode. The Post Show will feature updated commentary by me as well as segments like “Kill of the Week” and “The Quote” where I break down my reasoning for using the different quotes that appear at the beginning of every episode.
Well, this has gotten a lot more long winded than I’d intended it to so I’m just gonna wrap things up by saying how absolutely excited I am to be making the move to Compass and to once again reintroduce Caydem Falls to a whole to network of fans. I hope to see all of you there!
